Taking their name from a Bob Dylan lyric wrote in 1962, Dead Oceans see themselves as redefining indie music in the modern era by pushing singer-songwriters with an indie aesthetic. Their artists are independent but not always indie rock.

Founder Phil Waldorf was inspired by the way bands borrowed ideas from other genres and wanted to create a place for artists with a singular vision to embrace their creativity.
