The Canadian label made headlines in the 2000's for supporting downloaded music in the face of industry opposition such as the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). It was a David & Goliath story that saw the small Canadian indie fighting against the collective might of the American music industry.
The 'collapsed copyright' model proposed by Nettwerk would mean artists owned the song as well as the specific recording of it. As such, they could charge what they wanted and keep the profits for themselves. The model would've drastically reduced the role, profitability and power of record labels and was met with fierce opposition.
