- "I did this song with Maynard from Tool. Basically, I told him I wanted to create a scenario of being in a car and being taken for a drive when you don’t really know what’s going on. I wanted him to create a lot of imagery. He wrote a majority of the lyrics and left blanks for me to fill in. It seems like you’re being held captive, but enjoy what’s going on." (Chino Moreno)
- Sex song.
-
Features vocals from Tool's James Maynard Keenan in a meeting of two heavy metal heavyweights.
- The music was completed first and the vocals added later.
- DJ Frank Delgado, who also plays keyboards, became a full time member of the band on this album.
- 'White Pony' took a year to make and was fraught with tension as different members of the band wanted to have their say, which pulled the sound in various directions. It was this push and pull that made for a more avant garde listening experience than their previous efforts and also, surprisingly, produced the groups best received album, both critically and commercially.
- The album was released on singer Chino Moreno's birthday.
- Part of the reason Deftones sound different to many bands in metal is that they're influenced by an eclectic array of outfits from outside the genre such as the dream pop of Cocteau Twins, which explains the mist like haze in their sound, Depeche Mode, The Cure and Mogwai.
