Details

  • Big Thief knew Dragon New Warm Mountain would be epic. They wanted to make a 20 track, double album that would fully encompass the bands sound so they decided to record at four different locations and use four different sound engineers. One of those locations just so happened to be atop a mountain. To take a break from it all, away from their native New York, the band set up shop at the Studio in the Clouds, high in Colorado's Rocky Mountains, and recorded 'No Reason', as well as a few others.

While there, up in the mountains, the band heard the sweet sound of Richard Hardy's flute coming from a nearby room and invited him to sit in for a session. Hardy is a multi-instrumentalist, well known for his work with singer-songwriter Carole King, who quickly clicked with Big Thief. They came up with this song there and then in the studio. The song features a lengthy solo by Hardy and wouldn't be the same without it which has made it difficult to incorporate into live sets.

Most people wouldn't want to spend a month on an isolated mountain with their former spouse but singer Adrianne Lencker and guitarist Buck Meek didn't seem to mind. The pair divorced in 2018 and have remained amicable through a period which has seen the band catapult to great success. One can only imagine that performing love songs about your former partners new flame might be a bit awkward but the band do have a bohemian vibe so maybe it's all somehow fine. Good for them.
