- The groups creative process is Ethan Kath, the producer, will make a
load of beats and give then to singer Alice Glass who records vocals on the ones
she likes. When they first started Ethan provided 25 beats and Glass
recorded on 5, so a rate of 20%. For 'Crystal Castles II' Ethan provided
70 beats and Alice recorded on 35 of them, so 50%. Alice took the music more seriously as it became successful and she became more mature. The final
album was then whittled down to 14 tracks.
- The song has a frozen, icy tone that is detached. Large parts of the album were recorded in the freezing wastes of Iceland. The subject matter of 'Suffocation' in particular is extremely dark with sections about rape "we ignore refused consent", suicide "I suffocate and promise me you won't resuscitate" and the hopelessness of depression "you've waited in vain because there's nothing for you."
