Details
  • In the classic film Citizen Kane, a wealthy publishing tycoon called Charles Foster Kane dies unhappily thinking about his favourite childhood sled: Rosebud. For Kane, Rosebud represented the lost innocence of his childhood, as it was the toy he was playing with when he was forcibly removed from his home.

Meg Remy believes that in life we create cages for ourselves, "a cage holds you, we've all got one we call home," and our Rosebud, or substantial formative experience, is the key to unlocking the door and finding freedom: "who holds the key is what you need to know".

It's about understanding yourself on a fundamental level. What is it that keeps you going? What is it that you truly want and value? 'Rosebud', the song, is about overcoming your demons through psychological exploration and becoming a free person who is no longer led by the programming instilled in them since childhood.

So, U.S. Girls work has the artsy tone prevalent on her earlier work. Remy told Rolling Stone that she wanted to make "something that could be played in situations where thinking isn't usually encouraged... there’s songs on this album that could be played when you're shopping at Forever 21."
