- Aldous Harding's music is the unique work of a true artist. It's
definitely weird but weird in the way a person is when they're truly
being themselves. It reminds me of PJ Harvey, and this track is produced
by Harvey's long time collaborator John Parish. Parish also played in
Nick Cave's band The Bad Seeds for a while.
I don't think Harding's released her best music yet but she shows so much promise. Each of her albums is inches away from being a classic, they just need to unlock that special ingredient to move from good to great. From what I've heard, it wouldn't be surprising if a future Harding release became the best record of whatever year it happened to be released.
Her music is dark, haunting, melancholic and artsy but not in an edgelord gothic way, but in a whispered word carried on the wind way. It sounds like a woman wondering around the countryside on her own after dark only to feel a ghostly hand pressed against her shoulder, and when she turns around she finds... nothing... even though she could have sworn there was somebody there.
Her vocal performances are impressive because she ranges from very low to very high notes one after the other in a style that's unnatural. Normally singers move up and down the notes of a scale, but Harding jumps from one extreme to the other, and back again, without falling out of key. Even if you don't like the music, you can't help but admire her display of precision singing. 'Imagining My Man' is a good example of this style of delivery. - 'Fixture Picture' is about a relationship Harding had with the singer Marlon Willliams. It's over and Harding has moved on, but there's no hard feelings and the possibility of them meeting again is kept open.
- Breakup song.
