Details
  • 'Imagining My Man' is an honest song about the reality of love compared to the ideal a girl dreams about when she's growing up. It's sung from a mature perspective which makes it stand out from the crowd of songs about relationships. The liason hasn't worked out and Harding knows it was never perfect. The song recognises the fact that in adult life, shades of grey can replace the vibrant, optimistic colours of youth.

The chorus featurs a little girl shouting "hey" juxtaposed with the downbeat singing of the mature Harding which represents the negotiation between the woman grown and the girl inside. The reality not living up to the ideal can be a difficult thing to deal with and is a complicated subject to write a song about. The man described in the song sounds like a real person "you're so nervous all of the time" instead of the far-fetched Prince charming character a girl might expect to emerge from the cloud of childhood fantasies.
