Details
  • case / lang / veirs are a supergroup of country singers that have each had successful careers as solo artists. K.D. Lang will be the most recognisable to mainstream fans but for my money, Neko Case has one of the most powerful voices in modern music. Laura Veirs is a solid singer-songwriter in indie folk and holds her own well. This album made me a fan of hers as I didn't know much of her earlier work.

On this album, all three singers interweave their vocals to create melodies and harmonies that do each of them credit. With so many singers on each track the songs could have easily become crowded but the women work together to allow the music to breath in an admirable display of putting the work before ego.

It's interesting to hear how solo artists work in a group because under normal circumstances they'd have entire songs to fill but here they have to bide their time. On 'Greens of June', K.D. Lang is effectually a backing singer, but she nails her parts and doesn't miss a beat.

Even the name of the project, case/lang/veirs, which has the singers listed in alphabetical order by surname, shows the sense of professionalism they had in the collaboration. Sometimes, when big-egos are involved things can quickly go off the rails, but not here.

This record has three established singers who have honed their craft over decades, Lang was in her fifties when the album was released, and their experience shows in not only the songwriting and performances, but the well-adjusted way they went about making the thing.

  • The producer, Tucker Martine, is Laura Veirs husband.
