- The band also had a bone to pick with Rage Against the Machine, who they claimed to be faking an urban Los Angeles lifestyle. While the version of the song that features on the album doesn't mention RATM by name, an earlier version, that can be found above, does. In the second verse the original states, "What does Rage know about motherfucking South Central", while the album versions modified lyrics are "what does the fake know".
The early version calls out Zach De La Rocha by name "Zach, what you know about a set or a sign? Fake motherfucker never even seen a nine", while the revised version from the album has the lyric as "Fool, what you know about a set or a sign?"
It's possible that downset sought to gain some spotlight by instigating a rivalry with the more popular Rage Against the Machine. The two bands were both rap metal acts from Los Angeles who would likely appeal to a similar demographic, and the call out brings to mind beefs from hip hop that usually increased sales for all involved. As far as I know, RATM completely ignored downset.
