Details
  • On the track, vocalist Max Cavalera plays the berimbau, which is a bowed instrument popular in Brazil that can also be used as a weapon. Practitioners of capoeira, a martial art that mixes fighting with dancing, carry a berimbau to make sure they're ready for both partying and violence. It's best to be prepared on the mean streets of Brazil. Every instrument could potentially be used as a weapon, with the possible exception of the triangle, but the berimbau has the reach required to hit your opponent from afar.

  • The song's about returning to the ancient tribal way of life and reconnecting with our roots. Cavalera is from Brazil, which still has tribes living in the Amazon rainforest, a habitat which is vital for the survival of every person on Earth, as it absorbs a huge quantity of CO2 from the atmosphere. Despite this, each year the rainforest grows smaller, as developers exploit its riches for profit.

Cavalera growls "fuck all your politics" and "the god will guide me" as an expression of a religious meaning deeper that runs deeper than the state.

  • Soulfly mix metal with the tribal sounds of Brazil, incorporating unusual instruments and a strong percussive element.
  • Ozzy Osbourne makes a cameo in the music video.
  • The song is co-produced by Sean Lennon, who is the son of Beatles legend John Lennon. Sean also sings on the track 'Son Song' from the same album. Cavalera and Sean both lost their fathers when young and the pair bonded after meeting at a music festival in 1999.
  • Max Cavalera previously fronted the Brazilian thrash metal band Sepultura, who are well known in metal circles for albums such as Beneath the Remains (1989) and Arise (1991).
  • The name Soulfly is inspired by the belief many tribes have of spirits, the souls of their ancestors, flying around them when they make music. Some tribes even believe that the souls of animals, such as the animal used to make hide for the drum, is called upon when the drum is played. Max Cavalera liked this idea so much he decided to name his band Soulfly.
