Details.
  • 'Like Today' is a cover of 'La Di Da Di' by Doug E Fresh from 1985. Slick Rick, who was known back then as MC Ricky D, raps about a day in his life on the original. He wakes up, gets dressed, makes himself fresh, before hitting the town, only to be accosted by the mum of a girl whose heart he had previously broken. Ultimately, the mother is so charmed by Ricky that she tries to get with him herself only to be rejected by the rapper because of her age.

In Atmosphere's version, updated for the more cynical late-nineties early-2000's audience, Slug wakes up in a depression pit, gets ready, hits the town and pulls a gorgeous girl only to wake up back in his bed and realise it was all a dream.

The average day in the life of a rapper presented in 2001 is much different than it was in 1985. Slick Rick had a life Slug could only dream about. The mischievous shenanigans have been replaced by everyday monotony "yesterday was like today." Fun has been replaced by cynicism "in tomorrow I see no promise." Slick Rick raps "fresh, dressed like a million bucks" which Slug replaces with "fresh, dressed like 50 cent."

Although the Atmosphere version is presented as a downgrade, I find it more relatable. Even though Atmosphere's version is presented as if it's a dream, I find it more real. It's absurd to think the girl's mum in Slick Rick's version went from angry to sex-mad over the course of a conversation. It's clearly a story. Atmosphere's version is also a story but it's a story based in the real. It's a kitchen sink drama instead of a ghetto fantasy.
