  • The early hype surrounding Canibus was insane because of the phenomenal performances he put in for DJ Clue (featured above), which featured so many classic lines it's difficult to pick a few out but here goes "every word I utter for hip hop lovers will reflect forever like two mirrors facing each other" and "I crush a piece of coal to make a diamond". He also featured on tracks by respected rappers where he easily came out better, such as his appearance on 'Making A Name for Ourselves' by Common and 'Desperados' by The Firm, where he went up against AZ.

Following the release of his disappointing debut album in 1998, Canibus took it back to basics on '100 Bars' from his next full length. The track is stripped back, raw hip hop free from structure, hooks and guest appearances. It's a rapper rapping for a full five minutes and it's what Canibus does best. He enters a zone and stays there while spitting so many dense bars it takes multiple listens to fully appreciate. It isn't hip hop for the casual listener, but it is a return to the days when Canibus was lauded as one of the best rappers of his generation.

The raps speak for themselves and simply reproducing the lyrics here wouldn't do them justice because it isn't about any individual lyric, it's about the way they keep coming one after the other in a relentless barrage that forces the listener to marvel at a display of breathless, intelligent hip hop complete with fighting spirit.
