- 'Deep' is another collab between Elzhi and his long time production partner Black Milk. The beat is funkier than those found on their previous album, The Preface, and it's easy to see why this song was chose for a music video. Elzhi rhymes in his signature patterns style, which includes lines such as "kill grills, my steel peels, then peel wheels then skill feels like it heals ills like Benadryl pills", which struggles to make sense but creates a rapid fire rhythm that hops over the beat, and before you know it, you're nodding your head.
I suppose the lyric means he shoots a gun "my steel peels" then he drives off "then peel wheels" and his rhyming makes you feel better "skill feels like it heals ills like Bendaryl pills." But the meaning is, for the most part, besides the point. What's really on display is rhythmical prowess instead of raw lyricism, similar to when Run DMC would rap "Peter Piper picked peppers" in 1986. When Elzhi nails these patterns they sound nice. It provides infectious music you can vibe to.
The production work really shines here and, if anything, the rapping serves as punctuation to keep it interesting. Elzhi used to rap with Slum Village, whose producer J Dilla made beats that were so good he needed rappers who could accentuate them rather than than the other way round. Black Milk works in a similar vein and, for me, Elzhi is at his best when his rapping and the beat share the spotlight.
