It's a rite of passage for every music fan to be lectured by their elders on why The Beatles are the Best Band in the World™. I'm pretty sure it's what Moses said to the tribes of Israel after coming down from Mount Sinai. Joking aside, the question becomes: 'why do so many people regard The Beatles as the greatest band of all time?'
The answer lies not only in their technological innovations, pioneering studio production, and critical work establishing genres ranging from folk-rock to psychedelia, but in the way they defined the very concept of the modern band. They upended the traditional notion that singing, songwriting, and overall musicianship are separate endeavours, and in doing so, charted a course through popular music that evolved alongside the '60s, into a state of creative and cultural nirvana.
In the Tin Pan Alley/Brill Building era, professional songwriters provided the likes of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra with their material. Additionally, specialist session musicians recorded in the studio. The Beatles were, in contrast, a 'self-contained' band that wrote, sang, played, and composed their own work, as well as handling the necessary charisma-based duties.
Considering the band's immense impact on music history, it is staggering that their recording career spanned just seven active years (roughly 1962–1969). Their evolution from mop tops to creative visionaries bookended a decade, making them a perfect fit to soundtrack the socio-political transformation of the '60s.
As working-class Liverpudlians who conquered the world, their early success challenged the strict confines of the British class system. In April 1964, they dominated the US Billboard Chart by holding the top five positions simultaneously. During the counter-cultural renaissance of the mid '60s, the band embraced the kaleidoscopic world of LSD to pursue an on-trend path of expanded consciousness. Tracks such as 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds' (1967) exemplify.
"Picture yourself in a boat on a river with tangerine trees and marmalade skies."As the decade drew to a close, they became politically active and advocated for non-violence during the Vietnam War, crafting iconic anthems of peace such as 'Revolution' (1968).
"We all want to change the world. In summary, The Beatles were a defining force in the most culturally impactful decade of the modern era. They shared radical new ideas with an audience of millions, both reflecting and steering bold cultural change that shaped the world we live in today. Modern life wouldn't be the same without The Beatles because their actions gave birth to the creative blueprint that shapes the assumptions around what real musicians 'should' be.
But when you talk about destruction don't you know that you can count me out?"
