Originally established by a record shop owner as a way of sharing profits with punk bands in West London. Has since become a key player in the landscape of British independent music. The independent label was home to one of the biggest acts of the eighties, in The Smiths, but the glory days wouldn't last and they were declared bankrupt in 1991.
At the start of the new millennium Rough Trade rose again, like a phoenix from the flames, under the leadership of their founder Geoff Travis. Now, as a part of Beggars Group, they operate several record shops to advocate for independent music and turn a tidy profit.
