Details
  • An early version from 1991-1992 is available. Phair promoted the songs in her local Chicago under the moniker Girly Sound.

  • "This was the Rolling Stones 'All Down the Line' in my saga. They’ve just been in their disagreement moment and now the guy is checking out and hitting the road. He’s going back out on tour. I liken Johnny Sunshine to investing all this stuff in this relationship and then you’re just taking off. It’s that feeling of abandonment that you feel when you’re like, "Fine! Go! I don’t care." Then, of course, you break into the truth of it, which is that she’s devastated." (Liz Phair talking to Rolling Stone)
  • The song's about a womans relationship with Johnny Sunshine, a good-looking guy who says the right things but is a total arsehole. When they break-up, he kills her cat and steals her car. Mr. Sunshine is the wrong type of guy, who can be found wearing a leather jacket at the local rock club as he waits for a gullible girl to lend an ear and fall for his bullshit. There's one in every town.
