Details
  • Dots and Loops was one of the first albums to be produced using a Digital Audio Workstation, namely ProTools. The software allowed the band to record, loop, and layer short segments of music in a way that allowed for endless experimentation.

No longer did they have to play extended sequences in order to incorporate a new section. The DAW broke the recording process into manageable, bite-size chunks which allowed the band freedom to be creative. The group found the new process invigorating, as it removed much of the drudgery from recording.

  • Breakup song

  • Dots and Loops takes its name from two short films directed by Norman McLaren in 1948 and 1952 respectively. The films, one called Dots and the other called Loops, featured an innovative 'animated sound' technique which was created by drawing directly onto the film itself.
