Details
- Hailing out of Dallas, Texas, Secret Machines are a space rock band who released their debut EP six weeks after forming in 2002. They came into their sound quickly because the individual members were experienced musicians, but also because things just clicked. Two of the three members were brothers, which helped with the bands instant rapport.
It wasn't long before they signed to a major label. Their debut album was released in 2004. Despite their media push, Secret Machines achieved limited commercial success. Their highest chart entry reached #43 in the UK, but they toured the world and opened for acts such as Oasis and Kings of Leon, so it wasn't all bad.
The boys knew how to put a song together and were unafraid of their sixties influences. - They have cited fellow space rock group Spiritualized as a major influence.
- They are also influenced by Led Zeppelin and have stated that they try to make dirty, sexy grooves in their music. 'Sad & Lonely' is a prime example of this, and has Zeppelin's influence all over it.
- Guitarist Benjamin Curtis died of cancer at the age of 35 in 2013.
- Space rock is a form of psychedelia that uses reverb and effects to create a sound of space and science fiction. In more recent times, the style has drifted away from the minimal soundscapes of the past into a dynamic, front-foot forward punk approach that mixes the space sounds with fuzzy guitars and hard-hitting drums.
