- As is customary with folk music, the song has passed from generation to generation and over time, different version have emerged. The earliest , which replaces Lord Abore with Prince Robert, is Scottish and dates back to 1802. There is also an American rendition called Harry Saunders.
- The song is about a family taking violent action to prevent their daughter marrying the scoundrel Lord Abore.
