  • A cover of Gordon Bok's 1971 original. However, Bok's version ran for only 2.53, while the Lankum version is 7 minutes. The length alone makes it clear Lankum have made significant changes.

  • The song is about a sailor who wants to stay at sea even though he can see the shore. There's nothing for him on land as his lady love Nancy is no longer around.

    The sailor feels useful at sea and, if returned to land, he would only waste his wages on wine & brandy. He would rather risk the open water and see where the tide takes him than drown his sorrows ashore. The sea represents possibility and freedom from the life prescribed for him at home. He has made his decision. He doesn't want to go back. It's a sailors life for him.
