Veteran Scouse singer Jane Weaver began her career as part of the Britpop group Kill Laura and has since embarked on a solo career, creating an ear-catching mix of folk, art pop, and psychedelia. She's a remarkably active musician who has released twelve solo albums since 2002.

With Weaver, every project excites because she slides between genres effortlessly. Pressing play is to be a kid inserting your hand elbow-deep in a lucky dip. Indie rock? Dream Pop? Maybe singer-songwriter? Or something electronic?

Her post-genre approach stems from a negative experience with the major label Polydor Records in the early-'90s. They refused to release a finished album made as a part of Kill Laura. As an eager teenager, she poured her heart and soul into the record. Having it sit on a shelf, never to be heard by the public, hurts till this day and steeled her against callous businessmen counting their coins. Still, the album remains unreleased.

Deeply wounded, bleeding, but undefeated, Weaver founded Bird Records in 2002 to self-release her material. A fearless champion of independent music, she encourages artists to retain full control and express themselves free from the malign influence of the overlords from corporate.

Her stellar work is criminally underheard, but exists in a state of uncompromised artistic freedom. Now well into her 50s, she plays small venues with a good-natured charm, reminding us that if you do what you love, you never work a day in your life. Support Jane Weaver and independent music by giving her a listen.
