Still Corners - Slow Air

Slow Air (2018)

Atmospheric open sky music.

Still Corners craft music that explores open landscapes and the branching possibilities of the road. Tracks like 'The Trip' and 'Black Lagoon' evoke feelings of adventure and freedom as they hurtle through starlit skies, secluded coves, and burning hot sand dunes. Such places are big enough to swallow you whole, vistas where time loses importance, conventional rules no longer apply, and you can be reborn.
"Dreaming as the hours fade away
Watching as the sunlight does the same
Everything we are is on the line
Let's pretend it's not us tonight" (from 'Black Lagoon')
Throughout their discography, Greg Hughes' production, with its dreamy ambience and lush swirls of warm electronic fuzz, combines with Tessa Murray's gliding vocals to create a sense of drift. The sound feels like being at peace in an atmospheric neverland between two points, hoping to never arrive at a destination. Yet, the kinetic drums propel the songs forward, and knowing the journey will end is what gives it true meaning.

While the instrumental aspects of the music create a cinematic environment and take prominence over the lyrical content, the vocals crucially humanise proceedings, reminding the listener that a place is only as interesting as the people who pass through.

This deliberate artistic choice, to downplay the importance of lyrical content, is a hallmark of dream pop that encourages subjective interpretation. Much like Impressionist painting, it's a play of suggestion, a shadow in a reflection, of fluid meanings that take shape and transform. This watery concept is echoed in song titles such as 'Currents', 'Submarine', and 'Black Lagoon'.

While Still Corners haven't stormed the charts or won major awards, they have had a lasting impact on the dream pop/shoegaze revival of the 2010s, with sleeper hits such as 'The Trip' racking up over 90 million streams on Spotify.

Emotional Impact

i Does it connect with the heart? What does it make you feel and how much of it?
85

Mental Impact

i Does it connect with the head? Social issues, interesting observations, clever lyrics, similies etc.
55

Originality

i Are they unique? Did they break new ground, use new techniques or create new genres.
65

Artistry

i Using creativity and imagination to present themselves in a unique way. Example, Wu-Tang Clan as Shaolin and Marvel characters etc.
70

Authenticity

i Do they really mean what they say? Is it autobiographical, personal?
60

Live

i Stage presence, working the crowd, performance. Miming, forgetting lyrics reduce this.
70

Production

i Studio techniques. More important for electronic music including hip hop. The score is reduced for the lo-fi production of Stereolab's early albums.
85

Musicianship

i Their ability to play individually and as a group. Technical skills. DJing. Freestyling for hip hop.
70

Singing

i Technical attributes.
75

Songwriting

i Storytelling. Cohesive themes. Is the song about something? Stan by Eminem is an example of excellent songwriting.
85

Danceability

i Does it make you move? Do you tap your foot, nod your head or move your whole body?
70

Fun

i Is listening to it a good time? Are the lyrics funny? Depressing themes lowers value.
70

Consistency

i Have they put out good music across their careers. Two good albums and 5 band ones will reduce this value. Reduced for Pixies due to their post-reunion albums.
70

Range

i Fast, slow, ballads, party jams. Do they go beyond their own genre?
75

Cool

i Laid-back, icy detachment, unflustered.
70

Charisma

i Factors include appearance, force of personality. Elvis making people faint etc.
